Google Chrome: why use anything else?  Really?  If you are still using Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox or just use any browser, have you been introduced to the powers of Google Chrome?  Really?  Google Chrome can do not just a few tricks that will make your life better, but can do hundreds of things those other browsers cannot.  Like the commerical above says, it is a browser for every device (including your phone).  Most of this endorsement comes from the ability to sign in and then customize your browsing experience to make you more efficient and effective.  This will not only work for you, but it will work for your students as well.  Signing into Google Chrome is the magic trick that will help even the youngest students make the most of their time online.   Learn more about Chrome magic and start exploring this powerful tech tool on all of your devices.

FAQ

Can students login to chrome and use extensions too?

Yes.  MISD can easily add extensions for students, for example they all have access to the Read and Write Extension, but students can also add their own.

Hint:   If you want students to add an extension, add a link into google classroom (or anything you can share and they can click) just have your learner click on the link and download

I don't have enough devices for each student to have their own.  How can they EACH sign in to Chrome and make this work?

Using the magic of Switching Users, students can quickly switch between accounts.  As suggested in the iPad Apprentice TLC, teachers are highly encouraged to name and number their devices and assign these to students; then invite the MRS to do a workshop with students.  The MRS can teach students to login to Chrome (and all things Google) and to switch between accounts to access their own version of Chrome and access their own files.

What is the difference between Google Apps and Google Extensions?

This Tech Minute explains it well, but basically Apps are Applications: stand alone programs that have their own purpose and functionality.  On the other hand, Extensions are add-ons to the Google Chrome web browser that make it work better.  For example I love the Honey extension that helps find quick discount codes everytime I checkout with a shopping cart.

Which Extensions are best?

If you search "best chrome extensions for teachers" or "best chrome extensions for students" you will get many great and different lists and no two teachers are the same.  Find the ones that suit your needs the best.

Still, which ones do YOU recommend?

I LOVE iChrome (others like Increadible Start Page or one of these many options for new tabs).  Read and Write is so good all MISD students have it by default.  I also recommend these extensions:  Google Calendar, One Tab, Invisible Hand, CraftyText, Web of Trust, Pinterest, The Great Suspender, Grammarly and Share to Classroom to name a few.

I have a personal Google account and an MISD account, can I switch between both on my laptop/computer?

Yes!  This is another great way to keep yourself and your multiple hats organized.  Switching between profiles will allow you to have personal and professional bookmarks, and personal and professional extensions.

Do I need to sign in with Chrome on every device?

Yes.  Signing in with Chrome will allow you to have the same bookmarks on each device, chrome will save all of your passwords, and help you fill forms in with speed.

Challenge

Task 1:  Learn about Chrome using the resources above.  Then sign in to Chrome on at least two devices.  Import bookmarks if needed.  If you have a personal Google account switch and set that up as well.

Task 2:  Research Google Apps and Extensions.  Find at least 3-5 of each that you want to install and begin using.

Task 3:  Research Google Apps and Extensions for students.  Find at least two of each that students should install on their profiles beyond Read and Write.

Bonus Task:  Post to your favorite social media page (Twitter if possible) with #Chrome about why you think Chrome is awesome, a favorite extension or tip for student use.
