Learn More

The iPad is a favorite technology tool for students and teachers.  These little devices are extremely easy and powerful but that means that these extremely easy and powerful devices are in little hands.  If you know a little about the iPad, how to manipulate  it, the best apps and a few magic tricks-- you can not only be steps ahead of your students but ready to make the most of this classroom tool.  Start by learning about iPad basics, a few tips and tricks, problem solve to alleviate past issues and then go on to discover the best apps to download to your devices.  Keep the SAMR model in mind when selecting apps and remember that these are meant to be learning devices......an iPad loaded with creation apps will benefit students more than one loaded with apps like angry birds (and provide students with an important lesson about how to use free time to LEARN).

FAQ

How many iPads does each class get?

Each class will have at least 5 iPads (iPad2 or iPad mini), along with other technology (desktops or laptops) depending on the grade level.  Teachers are encouraged to work with team members to share technology when needed. iPads come with charging cords but do not have cases.

What restrictions should I set on the iPad?

Checkout Malvern's iPad University (restricted to Malvern teachers for security reasons) to learn which restrictions are recommended/required and how to set each of these.

What rules should we set for using the iPads?

Students and parents will be required to sign an Acceptable Use Policy, and McKinney ISD has clear rules about Internet use.  It is important to make students aware of these rules, in words they can understand, at the beginning of each school year.  Lessons about Internet Safety and Digital Ettiquette are always important to present to help each class determine the best norms.  However, most class rules can apply to iPads and all technology---most of all be respectful:  treat the iPad with care and remember if it breaks, it may take up to a year to replace.

Challenge

Task 1:   Research the iPad basics, tips and tricks using the links above paying specific note to iPad University and the tips from the Malvern MRS.  Create an organizational plan for iPads in your classroom.

Task 2:  There are SO many great apps for the iPad.  Do a little research and make a list of those you would like to see on the devices for your grade level.  Logging in to the grade level account will allow you to see what has been purchased/downloaded in the past (App Store, purchased), but keep in mind that FREE apps are best as the grade level may not have funds available to purchase apps.

Task 3:  Create a master iPad including all required settings and desired apps.  Include as many MUST have apps as possible.

Bonus Task:  Post to your favorite social media page (Twitter if possible) with the #iPadEd  about either an app you look forward to using, students using an app or an iPad tip of your own
